Mah-Jong |
Mah-Jong (Hong Kong rules) is a four-player tile game
that is played widely around the world, especially popular
in the Far East. Mah-Jong players sit around a square
table and are dealt 13 tiles from a set of 136. The Mahjong
tiles are divided into 108 common tiles and 28 honour tiles.
Common tiles are split into 3 suits (Bamboo, Characters and
Circles) numbered 1-9 and these are duplicated 4 times. The
honour tiles are split into winds (North, South, East and
West) and dragons (Green, Red and White) and again these are
duplicated four times.
The aim of Mah-Jong is to make a winning hand by matching
sets of tiles before the other 3 players. Play moves
counter-clockwise around the table. Each player's turn
begins with a tile pick and ends with a tile discard. The
picked tile may either be a new tile chosen from the Wall,
or a discarded tile thrown by another player.
To make a winning hand in Mah-Jong you have to put the tiles
in sets of three, either 3 identical tiles (Pong) or 3 in a
row from the same suit (Chow). You can also make sets of 4
identical tiles (Kong) and finally you need to finish with a
pair. Matched sets that have been made by a "self-picked"
tile from the Wall can be kept concealed as long as the
player wishes to hide them. If a discarded tile is picked
up, it must immediately make a matched set and the set must
be revealed right away. Play continues until a player makes
and reveals a winning hand, or the game ends in a draw. Once
a player has made up a hand all hands are scored and even
though one person may have finished first another player may
